What is RPET?

What is RPET?

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a type of plastic that is used to make packaging such as plastic bottles and food containers, it takes a whopping 450 years to break down!! Bacteria is unable to consume and break down the chemicals in the PET preventing it to biodegrade.

RPET is recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) that has undergone a process to transform the plastic into flakes or pellets. The flakes can then be used to make clothing, carpet among other things and now Sustainable Canvas for artists!

Benefits of RPET

Each year, millions of tons of plastic waste are generated across the world with the majority ending up in the ocean, therefore using RPET plastic can have a positive affect in eliminating plastic waste and it uses much less water and greenhouse gas emissions to manufacture RPET in comparison to PET.

At least 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. Plastic debris is currently the most abundant type of litter in the ocean, making up 80% of all marine debris found from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Plastic is found on the shorelines of every continent, with more plastic waste found near popular tourist destinations and densely populated areas. If this bothers you, you can now do something about it in your art practice by using sustainable products starting with Sustainable Canvas.
