FAQs
We’re always excited to talk about Sustainable Canvas, so feel free to reach out if you don’t find the answers you're looking for below!
How does paint adhere to plastic?
You're working with a fabric that was once plastic bottles, you're not painting on plastic bottles themselves. Instead, the plastic is transformed into a polyester fabric and woven into a canvas. This canvas is gesso-primed at a facility in Australia, resulting in a high-quality surface that's ideal for painting.
What makes it archival?
Unlike natural fibre canvases, Sustainable Canvas won't develop mould even if stored in damp or humid conditions—a real plus for long-term preservation. Your artwork may be stored in damp or humid conditions after it has sold, you and your collector can be assured that the artwork won't be damaged in such conditions.
Sustainable Canvas also doesn’t expand or contract with temperature changes, unlike natural fibres. This means that if your canvas is professionally stretched, it will maintain its shape and won’t warp, even in regions with significant temperature fluctuations. Studies conducted overseas have shown that polyester canvas exposed to high heat remains stable, making it a preferred choice for museums and galleries preserving older artwork.
Though polyester canvas historically hasn't always been the preference for artists, its durability is becoming more widely appreciated. Add the environmental benefit Sustainable Canvas and it becomes an easy choice!
What types of paint are compatible with Sustainable Canvas?
You can use acrylic paint, oil paint, alcohol ink, and watercolors. Keep in mind, alcohol inks and watercolors will behave differently on this surface compared to traditional watercolor or Yupo paper.
If I order more than a meter, will it be cut?
If your order exceeds one meter, we won’t cut the canvas unless you specifically request it via email. For orders over ten meters, we’ll reach out to confirm whether you want the canvas cut.
Where can I have the canvas stretched?
We highly recommend Southern Buoy on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria for their commitment to quality and sustainability.
