Welcome to the very first post from Sustainable Canvas, where art meets environmental purpose. I'm Alanah Jarvis, an Aussie artist and former scuba instructor, and this is where I combine two passions: creativity and conservation.
🎨 Our mission and why it matters
At Sustainable Canvas, we believe every stroke of paint can create a ripple of change.
Our flagship product, premium canvases made from recycled plastic bottles, is a testament to this. Crafted from 37 bottles in each square metre, these canvases don't just support professional artistry; they fight plastic pollution while celebrating Australian-made quality.
Check out the rest of our recycled plastic lineup: palettes made from Australian industrial scrap, pots from repurposed milk lids, and soon other artist tools designed for daily art therapy.
🌏 The plastic problem in Australia
Before we pick up a brush, let's face the canvas of reality:
- Australia uses ~3.8 million tonnes of plastic annually, but only about 14% is recycled. The rest heads to landfill or incineration. (Source)
- We funnel roughly 130,000 tonnes of plastic into our oceans each year, threatening marine life and coastal beauty. (Source)
- On average, each person in Australia discards 60 kg of plastic waste per year, yet only about 12–13% is recycled. (Source)
- A staggering 84% of plastic waste ends up in landfill. (Source)
- When it comes to plastic bottles, barely 36% of PET bottles ever get recycled, and rates for other types are even lower. (Source)
These are not just numbers, they're everyday reminders of how easy it is for plastic to outlast our lifetimes, harm wildlife, and pollute cherished landscapes and oceans.
🧘 Art, therapy and responsibility
Using Sustainable Canvas products isn't simply sustainability focused, it's consciously artistic. Each painting becomes a statement of care, a way to process emotions while reducing environmental impact. We're all about that soothing brain-and-nature therapy combo: mindful creation that doesn't compromise on quality or integrity.
Many of our customers use our products to reconnect with their creativity, reduce eco-guilt, and take pride in sustainable practices.
"You inspired me to paint again!"
Amy C."I was sceptical, but it has a lovely primer, and my acrylics glide across really well. I love knowing I'm helping the environment."
